  • Professional Background
    Kate Selby, the owner and
    Director of Riding at The Equestry, has over 30 years experience with horses and riders of all levels and abilities. She has shown in USEF Dressage, AHSA Hunt Seat A-circuit competitions, and USEA Combined Training events. Selby has studied dressage in the U.S. and Germany with trainers including Egon von Neindorff, Walter Zettl, Major Anders Lindgren, and Dominique Barbier.

    Ms. Selby is a member of Vermont Technical College's Equine Studies Advisory Board. In 2002, Selby was named Instructor of the Year by the American Riding Instructor's Association (ARIA). She has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement from ARIA, and is Level III certified in Dressage and Hunt Seat Instruction. Worldwide, only 20 instructors hold double ARIA Level III certification.

  • Champlain Dressage Schooling Series
    Kate is one of the founding members and hosts of the Champlain Dressage Schooling Series, and sponsors The Equestry Perpetual Challenge Trophy (the year-end award for First Level).

  • Exhibition Rides
    Each year, Selby rides in the Dressage Exhibition at the Opening Ceremony for the Vermont Mozart Festival in Shelburne, VT. She is the Equestrian Director and Choreographer for Equine Dance Company, a touring equestrian dance company based in Vermont.

  • Middlebury College Coach
    In addition to owning The Equestry, Selby is the coach of the Middlebury College Equestrian Team, and is former Regional President of the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association. Since its inception 1995, the team has consistently ranked among the top five collegiate equestrian teams in the region.

  • Clinics
    The Equestry hosts several clinics a year that bring other trainers to the farm. Past visiting clinicians have included: Dressage master Walter Zettl; French dressage trainer Dominique Barbier; Classical riding instructor Paul Belasik; United States Dressage Federation Medallist Bill Warren; and Master James Shaw, Tai Chi instructor and riding coach.

  • Tufts University
    Since 1996, Selby and The Equestry have been annually recognized by Tufts University as participants in the Adopt-A-Vet program of the Tufts Veterinary School. Selby studied Animal Science at the University of Massachusetts and also studies psychology as part of her continuing education.
